VEIT GRUNDEL
NINETEEN | MALE | HUMAN | DAVID KROSS
ANXIOUS | EVEN-HANDED | ASTUTE | WITTY
family, storytellers, seafood | animals, blood, books
the city, luck, opportunities | failure, gambling, closed spaces
supporting his family | claustrophobia
shooting, clever beyond his education | making a legendary kill
veit looks like a typical forester, dirty to the point where it becomes hard to read his expressions through his earth-covered facial features. his mud-caked bangs stand in all directions over his greyish green eyes. Tattered clothes hang from his scrawny arms hinting at an inferior financial situation not solely caused by forces other than himself.
it would be easier to catch the boy's true intellect if it wasn't buried so deeply under phobias and occasional freakouts. veit is not simple minded or good-hearted in the traditional way, he assesses every new situation on it's own before ultimately deciding which side to take. his sense of obligation towards his family however, overrides almost every other wish and moral he has, making him strive to be what they wanted, even though bad luck seems to stand in the way of his family and destiny hardly seems to favor his endeavors. when exposed to the city and it's numerous inhabitants veit usually tries to hide his true heritage, often to no avail. the young hunter feels ashamed of his lack of education and the wish to learn rather than spend his time hunting has left him bitter towards his inability to read. he is naturally attracted to people with experiences beyond what he could have possibly experienced, yet is quick to lose respect and interest if they cannot match up with what he had imagined them to be.
veit grew up with three older brothers, idolizing them for their what they were. his father and mother loved all their sons the same, trying to distribute wealth and virtue between them evenly and so it came to be that the first brother grew up to be the smartest of them, able to handle all the family's bargaining and finance single-handed. the second brother grew up to be strong, working on collecting lumber for the family and wrestle beasts at any time or weather. the third became a devout man, his piety beyond that of any other far and wide, praying in between a circle of candles day and night to bring happiness to his family. with every misfortune the brothers virtues only seemed to increase a tenfold. veit watched them, his admiration growing with each passing year. of course, father and mother still took care of their youngest, raising him to be as honorable as their other three sons. yet disaster struck before veit would ever know what made him special and indeed if he was anything but unlucky at all.
first veit's oldest brother was taken by gambling, the next by wild animals and finally the last in a fire with most of the family's belongings. devastated by these tragedies, family life could never return to the way it had been. veit however was unwilling to give up and setting out against the odds he decided to bring back the family's fortune by slaying a beast to earn him a living. Disregarding his parents' begging to stay home within the safe arms of his mother, he marched into the forest. Weeks later, starving and without any food or water he knelt in front of a well to quench his thirst. unfortunately for him he was startled by a hare and in his fear fell forward into the well, where he spent about a week, his body soaked to the bones. finally, a band of traveling entertainers stopped by the well and to their surprise found a half-starved, feverish boy inside. taking care of the young hunter, they brought him to the nearest hospice where he spent his time recovering. left in a foreign place and far away from any kill he could make veit feels somewhat lost within the city, and struggles to find a purpose or a way to settle back into his original goal. he fails to collect enough optimism within himself to go back into the forest and is currently hiring himself to do odd jobs that he doesn't ask too many questions about, waiting for an opportunity to open up while his patience is running out.
